Proposal for modification of the technological flow of a treatment plant using artificial wetlands for the comprehensive treatment of wastewater and septic sludge

Inadequate management of sludge derived from septic tanks increases the pollutant load in sewerage systems and reduces the operational effciency of existing treatment plants. This study proposes the modification of the technological flow of a treatment plant by incorporating constructed wetlands for sludge processing and vertical-flow wetlands for the water line. A diagnostic assessment of the current system was conducted, followed by the design of a new technological scheme that enables the simultaneous treatment of wastewater and sludge, prioritizing the use of available infrastructure and minimizing energy consumption. The preliminary sizing included calculations of surface areas, granular media thicknesses, and sludge application rates. The results demonstrate that the proposal is technically feasible, economically advantageous, and environmentally sustainable, enhancing the overall effciency of the system and mitigating the impact on the receiving body.
