Un modelo numérico con MATLAB para simular la autodepuración de un río
Keywords:
self-purification, finite elements, numerical model, riversAbstract
This work proposes a 1D numerical model for evaluating water quality in rivers and canals. It is based on the application of the Finite Element Method (FEM) to the differential equations of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) under steady-state conditions. The FEM model was implemented in MATLAB, coupled with an optimization algorithm for calibrating the kinetic parameters and the dispersion coeffcient. The application is shown to a real case of a river in Cuba. Its application demonstrates the model’s ability to predict pollutant dynamics, supporting the sustainable management of water resources. Furthermore, its implementation will facilitate decision-making regarding wastewater discharges, contributing to river protection.
