Abstract

With population growth, the demand for basic water and sanitation services increases in both rural and urban areas. The proper functioning of stormwater drainage systems allows for the evacuation of heavy rainfall, thus preventing overflows in the drainage system caused by surface runoff. Water scarcity, poor water quality, and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security worldwide. This research aims to justify (based on the experience of the lead author and with the guidance of the other two authors) the construction and/or maintenance work carried out on the urban stormwater drainage system along Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Paseo avenues in the Plaza de la Revolución municipality of Havana. These works contribute to the development of hydraulic infrastructure, resource conservation, and environmental protection and preservation. To achieve this, various theoretical and empirical methods were combined. The initial plan was to rehabilitate the 300 mm pipe, from the southbound lane to the northbound lane. As these works were carried out, it became clear that the expansion of the project was necessary; further research related to the collection and evacuation of rainwater is recommended, in search of other technical alternatives to improve the quality of life of the population and society in general.
