Abstract

A methodology based on the processing of the digital terrain model in SAGA-GIS is presented to determine flood scenarios in case of intense or prolonged rains in the Cunas river sub-basin, Junín, Peru. The variables calculated from the ALOS PALSAR DTM were: Closed depressions (CD), Vertical distance to the drainage network (VD), Modified catchment area (MCA), Surface runoff - Land runoff flow D8, and the topographic humidity index (TW1). Flood susceptibility is obtained as CD + MCA + D8 + TW1-VD. The resulting map validated in the field shows different degrees of susceptibility to flooding, highlighting three sectors where a significant group of population centers are exposed to potential medium to high grade flooding.
